Men Of War Vietnam Serial 17

"It's impossible to know how many people were killed in Vietnam. The United States government never released accurate figures." This statement is true, but it does not tell the full story. Over time after government bodies have acknowledged that they are unable to determine exactly how many people died in Vietnam, various compilations of death rates have been released. These reports were conducted by various organizations who ranged from the United Nations to private citizens. What these reports show is that there are almost no reliable records on how much was actually killed during the war in Vietnam by either side, but it is very likely that tens of thousands were killed due to war-related violence between both sides and civilians living in the country at the time. The nature of the war, the opposition to the war in Vietnam, coupled with the lack of official data on casualties, have meant that there have been many controversies over how many people died. When talking about casualties caused by American forces it is important to distinguish between combat deaths and what are known as "non-hostile deaths". Non-hostile deaths include actions such as accidents, illness or suicide.  If a soldier kills himself accidentally through negligence it would be classified as a non-hostile death. For example, if a soldier walks back to his camp after having been out drinking all night only to shoot himself after dropping his gun there would be an official record of this death but it would not be listed as combat related. Combat deaths are self-explanatory, they are caused by battle violence. The primary difference in the two is that non-combat related death rates can be much higher than combat related death rates in a war zone.  The US army reported a total of 16,592 combat deaths out of a total of 59,934 Americans who died in Vietnam from 1964 to 1973. However if this study included non-hostile causes then there would have been many more military personnel who would have been added to this number, with the total number of American deaths being much higher. In fact it has been claimed that there were more soldiers who died from non-hostile causes than troops killed in battle during the conflict.   The reason why they are not included in the official death figures is due to the difficulty of verifying the actual cause of death. For example, a soldier shot in a firefight with the North Vietnamese may be pronounced dead instantly and have a quick burial without a post mortem or even be thrown in a mass grave by his comrades. However, if there is no way to verify what happened during a firefight then it would be almost impossible to determine if he was killed by enemy combatants or from friendly fire. In situations such as this it would be very difficult to claim that he died from enemy fire when there is no evidence that could support this claim. This makes it difficult to determine exactly how many American soldiers died in combat or from non-combat related causes.  In a similar fashion to the US figures, other reports from the United States Department of Defense have been criticized for underestimating the number of Vietnamese casualties. In addition to this various studies conducted by various NGOs and other private organizations have estimated that there were between 1.5 million and 3 million other Vietnamese who were killed during the conflict however these figures are not widely accepted.
